How does Air Traffic Control actually work?

Air traffic controllers and pilots talk to each other in a certain way, and that way is so good that they always understand each other. Because pilots always talk back the controller's instruction (readback), the controller knows that his instruction has been understood by the pilot. So communication is super important. On the ground and in the air, pilots are in contact with several air traffic controllers, each of whom is responsible for a part of the entire flight process. You can experience how this works in practice in our Air Traffic Control Simulator. You can work with us as a pilot of arriving and departing aircraft or as an air traffic controller to safely land and take off aircraft. Step by step, we let you experience which air traffic controller does which part of the process and how these processes interact.

Air traffic control simulator

The air traffic control simulator (Air Traffic Control) lets you work as an air traffic controller or a pilot who wants to land or take off from the gate. If you want to depart, you have to deal with four air traffic controllers; Delivery, Ground, Tower and Departure. The air traffic controller plays all those roles, four on departing and three on arriving aircraft. The pilots are in contact with all the controllers. So you get a very good idea of what which controller does and how the whole process of arriving and departing is divided. You also learn how aeronautical communication works so that no mistakes are made if you follow the procedure exactly. The latter, of course, is very important for safety. You will work with three people in the simulator and of course others are allowed to watch.

Dive into the world of air traffic control

The location is at Teuge Airport. At this airport, you'll see all kinds of planes flying in and out. This will get you in the mood!

After being welcomed at the location, you will go to the air traffic control simulator, where you will get a short instruction. You will experience for yourself the communication between pilot and air traffic controller and how to communicate flawlessly. In addition, you will have an overview with everything that happens around Schiphol. You will perform all procedures yourself with the corresponding text. You will learn how different air traffic controllers guide each aircraft. Listening and memorising messages play an important role for an air traffic controller. Of course, the instructor will help you with everything.

Will you manage to take off several aircraft in a row and land others at the same time? With this experience, you will know exactly how things work in the control tower.

How long the experience lasts is up to you. The minimum is 90 minutes. But the longer, the more fun of course! Be surprised and take on the role of air traffic controller and pilot.
