Introduction

Learn the basics of gliding with this one-day course. During this introduction day you will fly 3 times under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

What will you do?

Your day starts in the morning with the briefing. This is how the gliding company always starts. The weather conditions, flight planning and all other relevant things for the day are discussed. Then you will get a short theory lesson from an instructor. You discuss the programme for the day and get ready for the inspection of the aircraft. You help with the preparations for the flight day.

After the inspection you get into the plane together and your first take-off starts. With a winch you will be pulled up far above the landscape. With your hands loosely on the control stick and your feet on the pedals, you will feel what the instructor is doing. From there, the difficulty is built up step by step. You will be flying more and more yourself. Of course, everything goes at a pace that you feel comfortable with. It is very quiet in a glider, so you can hear the instructor well while he tells you more about flying and the environment.

Between flights, there is plenty of time for all your questions. Before each flight there is a briefing and after each flight a debriefing. In addition, you will discover the club life of the gliding club and find out if this world is something for you. Who knows, this might be a nice step towards a multi-day course or even the complete training to become a glider pilot?

At the end of the afternoon your day is over. With the instructor you discuss the day and there is ample opportunity to ask all your questions. If you like, you can stay and chat with the rest of the crew afterwards. It's pleasant and you will notice that there is always an abundance of good stories.

Location

The course will be given at the airfield of Terlet, near Arnhem. On Terlet you will find the national gliding centre, where several gliding clubs are active. Terlet is a popular field for glider pilots from all over the country and even beyond. Location Terlet is situated in the beautiful surroundings of the Veluwe, in heathland. The airfield has a nice restaurant with a view on the glider field. There is always a lot of activity and you can enjoy all the gliders that fly continuously to and fro. This makes you even more enthusiastic about your own flight.

During the course, you will not only discover how much fun it is to fly a glider yourself, but also how sociable the team is. You might not expect it, but gliding is a real team sport. You'll be surprised how many people are needed to make you glide. Apart from your instructor, you will need a tip runner, a cable runner and a winch runner to get your plane in the air and safely guide it back in.

Multi-day courses and the full training course

The courses are a good introduction to learning gliding. Multi-day courses and full training are also available. Here, the lessons count towards the hours required for your licence. You will then start working to get your LAPL(S); Light Aircraft Pilot Licence Sailplane. This allows you to fly solo in a glider. This allows you to fly in the whole of Europe. Gliding is seasonal and has limited capacity. So book well in advance
We can only fly when there is sufficient visibility and not too much wind
Call the planner the day before your lesson if we can fly safely. You will receive the number with your reservation

The voucher is not personal but once the course has started it is no longer possible to change students

Wat een fantastische dag. Het was bloedheet maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. De organisatie op Terlet is geolied en professioneel. Veel geleerd, veel starts gemaakt. Kortom een uitstekende kennismaking met het zweefvliegen.

Veel persoonlijke aandacht en zelfs stukje zelf vliegen.
Op het veld zelf is naast het vliegen niets te zien of doen.

What a fantastic day. It was bloody hot but that didn't spoil the fun. The organisation at Terlet is well-oiled and professional. Learned a lot, took off a lot. In short, an excellent introduction to gliding.

Lots of personal attention and even some flying.
On the field itself, besides flying, there is nothing to see or do.

Fantastisch! Wat een fijne groep mensen, relaxte sfeer en iedereen helpt elkaar. Net een grote familie. Ik voelde me zeer welkom Alleen al het helpen met het vliegtuig naar de startbaan te brengen is erg leuk. Omdat er weinig thermiek bellen waren, en het daardoor korte vluchten waren, mocht ik 5x de lucht in. Bij de eerste vlucht werd ik op het laatst misselijk. Diverse leden hebben me goede tips gegeven zodat het daarna tijdens het vliegen weer goed ging. Ik kon ook zelf aangeven wanneer ik me weer goed genoeg voelde om weer te gaan vliegen. Met heel veel mazzel bij de vijfde keer want toen konden we zeker een half uur in de lucht blijven. Die stilte om je heen en het uitzicht, prachtig. Een grandioze ervaring.

Het omhoog cirkelen op een thermiekbel, eerst zie je allemaal boven je vliegtuigen cirkelen om vervolgens zelf helemaal boven te zitten en onder je de vliegtuigen te zien.
Dat mijn collega's die me deze dag kado gedaan hebben mee mochten naar de startbaan.
Ik zou het niet weten. Maar als ik dan toch iets moet noemen. Misschien de dagcursisten op het moment dat alle vliegtuigen naar voren gezet moeten worden even aangeven dat je dan kan helpen. De eerste keer was ik hier een beetje onzeker over en ben toen blijven zitten. De tweede keer wel meegeholpen.

Fantastic! What a nice group of people, relaxed atmosphere and everyone helping each other. Like a big family. I felt very welcome Just helping bring the plane to the runway is great fun. Because there were few thermal bubbles, and therefore the flights were short, I was allowed to take to the air 5 times. On the first flight, I got nauseous at the end. Several members gave me good tips so that it went well again afterwards while flying. I could also tell them when I felt well enough to fly again. Mijn vriend heeft dit kado gehad. An sich een leuke dag. In de info stond wel dat er geen faciliteiten op het veld waren en eten en drinken kon je meenemen. Wij hadden gezien dat er een restaurant was (stond ook vermeld dat daar het toilet was), dus wij dachten daar wel eea te kunnen doen. Niet wetende dat het veld bijna 2km lopen is. Had fijn geweest voor ons als dagcursist als dat vermeld stond. Na de vlucht was er weinig communicatie. Zou fijn zijn als je ongeveer weet wanneer je weer mag vliegen. Verder was men super vriendelijk en vol passie over de sport.

- Goede instructie en uitleg over het zweefvliegtuig (Ludo)
- Het zelf mogen sturen tijdens het vliegen
- Fijne instructeur (Ronald)
- Passie bij de betrokkenen
- Uitleggen afstand naar het veld als je als dagcursist mee opstart. Kunt aangeven om de auto achter te parkeren.
- Meer communicatie gedurende de dag. Ik begrijp dat er niet strak te plannen is, maar neem je daggasten daar dan in mee.

My friend had this gift. An sich a nice day. The info did say there were no facilities on the field and you could bring your own food and drinks. We had seen that there was a restaurant (it also said that the toilet was there), so we thought we could do things there. Not knowing that the field is almost a 2km walk. Would have been nice for us as day students if that had been mentioned. After the flight, there was little communication. Would be nice to know approximately when you can fly again. Otherwise, people were super friendly and passionate about the sport.

Het was heel bijzonder om tussen een clubje enthousiaste "oude rotten" en enkele jonge (aspirant) vliegers het zweefvliegen te mogen ervaren.
Ik heb een goed gevoel gekregen wat het inhoudt en helaas de grenzen van mijn evenwicht systeem opgezocht. (Werd wel versterkt door het bijzondere warme weer en de bij tijd en wijle forse turbulentie)

De ontspannen sfeer, de lekkere nuchtere benadering van de sport en de hands on mentaliteit. Absoluut geen elite sport.
De begeleiding door de instructeurs was heel prettig en werd goed afgestemd op je wensen en vaardigheden.
Misschien een beetje muggenziften maar na afloop had ik wel een wat meer pro-active benadering gehad over bijvoorbeeld een vervolg cursus of misschien zelf een lidmaatschap.
Natuurlijk kunnen we dit allemaal zelf ook opzoeken en navragen na thuiskomst. Diegenen die gemotiveerd zijn en verder willen doen dit toch wel.

It was very special to experience gliding among a club of enthusiastic "old timers" and some young (aspiring) pilots.
I got a good sense of what it entails and unfortunately pushed the limits of my balance system. (This was exacerbated by the particularly hot weather and the turbulence, which was considerable at times)

The relaxed atmosphere, the nice down-to-earth approach to the sport and the hands-on mentality. Definitely not an elite sport.
The coaching by the instructors was very pleasant and well tailored to your wishes and skills.
Maybe a bit of nit-picking but afterwards I would have liked a more pro-active approach about, for instance, a follow-up course or maybe even a membership.
Of course, we can all look this up ourselves and enquire after returning home. Those who are motivated and want to continue do so anyway.
